Part of the joy of cloth diapering is how simple and easy they are to use. Once you have a solid wash routine down and have learned the fastest way to get your favorite brand on a rolling, wriggling, tiny human, you are good to go.
However, as many parents have learned over time, there are some great cloth diaper accessories out there that can make your cloth diaper experience even easier. With input from many moms, we’ve put together Nicki’s Diaper's list of favorite cloth diaper accessories. These are the items that the Nicki’s Diapers moms are ordering for their littles on a regular basis and loving!
Newborn poop is wonderful! (Who thought you’d hear that?!) The waste from an exclusively breastfed baby doesn’t need to be removed before washing. Just change the diaper and throw the diaper in the diaper bag until wash day, no extra work required.
And then you start solids….oh my! The new colors and textures are a whole new experience and must be removed before washing. You could try the dunk and swish method, but who likes to experience that? A Spray Pal diaper sprayer easily attaches to your toilet for a no-touch solution to poop removal. Pair it with the Spray Pal Spray Shield, and you avoid any excess water or waste making its way out of the toilet. So simple and easy to use!
Another option to avoid the poop dilemma once your baby is on solids. Just lay the liner inside the diaper. Once soiled, shake the diaper contents, Imagine Liner and all, right into the toilet. No dunk and swish needed.
You’re already washing your cloth diapers, there’s no reason not to use cloth wipes as well. Unlike commercial wipes, they are chemical free and so soft on baby’s bottom. While a good wash routine will keep your cloth diapers clean and stain free, sometimes your diapers could use a little boost. Wouldn’t it be great if none of our babies were heavy wetters? The reality is that whether you have a heavy wetter or not, there are times where you want a little extra protection from leaks. For us, that’s the grocery run that is never actually fast or the long car ride to Grandma’s house. Why do we love Nicki’s Bamboo Doublers for this? You feel terrible when your baby ends up with an angry, red, bum, but you need to make sure to protect your diapers at the same time. One of our favorite cloth friendly diaper creams is CJ’s BUTTer. Our moms have used the healing solution for diaper rash, eczema, dry skin, wind burn, and even stretch marks! The shea butter is so smooth, soothing, and gentle enough for even sensitive babies.
I have to admit, there was a quick discussion about whether these were a cloth diaper accessory or not, but everyone quickly agreed that these cute leggings are definitely one of our favorite accessories to pair with cloth diapers! Think about it, you have a new baby and you’re learning the ins and outs of cloth diapering. Babies poop, a lot! With all of those diaper changes you could be pulling pants on and off, or you could try Imagine Baby Leggings. They’re so cute, keep baby’s legs warm, protect from scraped knees once they’re on the move, and make diaper changes so easy. If you live in a colder area, they are great to layer under pants in the winter to make sure baby’s legs stay warm and protected while you’re holding or wearing them.

Just as the first big snowstorm of the year was heading toward Wisconsin, our first bad baby cold of winter was also developing at our house. I'm not talking just any baby cold, think more like the daycare plague level. When we heard the first sneezes and coughs over the monitor during Baby Z's nap time, my husband and I looked at each other with scared eyes but neither of us wanted to acknowledge out loud what might be brewing in there.
The sniffles progressed to faucet level drainage and sneezes that produced more lime green mucus than seemed like could fit in her head. If we didn't swoop in and wipe it quickly enough, she was happy to lick it off her upper lip. Her swollen red eyes made her look just pitiful, but we were lucky enough to not have to deal with anything more than a very low fever.
Knowing how to treat a baby cold is always such a tough call. The medicines we've become accustomed to as an adult are a no-go with babies, and for some reason ga-ga doesn't fully communicate everything that's bothering her. So we pulled out all our natural remedies that we've gone to in the past or heard from other families.
We sucked a lot of snot for several days. I never knew that my excellent lung capacity was really preparing me for snot sucking mama days. We prefer a squirt of saline paired with the NoseFrida. Baby Z hates the saline but seems to settle in for the actual sucking part. We think she finds it relieving and knows it will help.
We received a ton of LuSa products when Baby Z was born and they became our go-to treatment option. The petroleum free Chest Rub right before naps and bedtime seemed to both calm her and help her breath better. We rubbed it on the soles of her feet before putting on socks, as well as on her chest. After a few days of the snot faucet, her poor nose was red and raw even though we had tried to use saline wipes most of the time. The LuSa Chin and Cheek Balm seemed to sooth it and helped calm the redness.
Essential oils in a diffuser are common place in our home and we alternated a diffuser with peppermint, lemon, and lavender with a humidifier to help keep the air moist. Baby Z also got to join us in the bathroom while we took showers so she'd benefit from breathing the warm, moist air. She found playing with the toilet paper roll was an added bonus.
After a few days of extra snuggles, fluids, and all of our home remedies, Baby Z seems to be over the worst of it. The only problem now is that she's lovingly shared her germs with mom and dad. I'm sitting here thinking I may need to call Grandma to come suck my snot.

Sniff, sniff. Cough, cough. AHH-CHOO!! Tis the season for germs and germ sharing! If you're like me, you're finding your little ones are the most adorable incubators for every little bug and virus out there! There are few things worse than having a sick kiddo. If you're lucky, it's just a cold that will pass quickly, but they can still be absolutely miserable and so can you.
When we had my first son, the hospital sent us home with one of those bulb syringes to clear out his nose when he was stuffed up. If you ever want to get your child to turn bright red and hyperventilate from crying so hard, get out the bulb syringe! I have to agree with their thoughts on it though! Can you imagine having a rubbery plastic thing shoved up your nose when you're already feeling pretty yucky? Then you have to pull it out, squeeze whatever goo out of it you can get, and repeat that multiple times. I'd cry, too.
When we had my second son, I was introduced to the most disturbingly wonderful product ever invented for parents... The Nose Frida Snot Sucker! You place the end of the Snot Sucker up to your child's nostrils. The very tip of it goes in just enough to form a seal with their nostril. Then you control the suction by sucking continuously and gently on the other end. Don't worry, there is a filter and the snot stays FAR from your mouth! You would be amazed just how much junk comes out! The best part of it is, no pain for your little one! The Snot Sucker snaps apart and you wash it with warm soapy water and replace the filter. No need to worry about snot lurking in the depths of the bulb syringe.

This morning was COLD here in Wisconsin. Not as cold as it's going to get, but cold enough that my kids' hats and mittens felt absolutely necessary.
