Product Review: Flip Training Pants

My middle son, Sean, at 2 1/2 is pretty much the epitome of a 2 1/2 year old middle child. He's spunky, stubborn and needs lots of attention. After we potty trained my oldest son, Ian, in 3 days, I knew we'd have a much harder time with Sean. Isn't that how it always goes?

Sean CAN go on the potty all day, but usually doesn't want to and isn't afraid to tell us that! Now that Emmett is moving into the one-size diapers, we have fewer diapers available for Sean. Knowing that we need something that is easy for him to pull up and down himself and something that will protect from accidents, I was excited to see the Flip Training Pants arrive!

The Flip Training Pants Package comes with 5 Organic Cotton inserts that attach into a one-size shell with hook & loop at the front and back. If the insert gets wet, simply change it out for another one! The stretchy side panels have snaps to allow for easy changes, if necessary. They are also interchangeable, allowing your child to customize their trainer! You can also purchase additional 3-packs of inserts if necessary!

Sean is not quite 30 pounds now and these fit him on the smallest setting. He's able to pull them up and down with ease and because of the natural fiber insert, he KNOWS when he wet! They are economical in that it's essentially 5 training pants in one. They also protect his clothing from leaks because the shell is waterproof! Once he's daytime potty trained, I envision these being a great option for catching overnight accidents.

The top two pictures are Sean (2 1/2 years old, about 30 pounds) and on the bottom is Ian (4 years old, about 40 pounds and heavily bribed for this picture).

Cloth at Night

Many parents are intimidated at the thought of using cloth diapers overnight. However, Cloth at night is not that different from cloth during the day. The key is to make sure there is enough absorbency to last the night.

Cloth diapering at night can be quite the adventure as you search for the perfect diaper and cover combination that will leave your baby happy and dry after a full night, the bed staying dry it just an added bonus! At first I had rough time with night time diapering of my twins. They are both very heavy wetters and would soak through to the bed in a prefold with a cover. Quickly I discovered that doubling the prefold and adding a fleece liner and a Flip cover worked awesome at night. From there I found that Bum Genius with both inserts or a bamboo fitted diaper with a wool cover would also do the trick!

Diapers made specifically for night time tend to be more absorbent & more than likely they will be a bit bulkier than your average daytime diaper.

Pocket diapers such as BumGenius can be great for nights because the absorbency is easily customized for your baby's needs. You can use additional micro inserts to help boost absorbency even more. The fleece interior lining of Pocket Diapers are great at helping wick moisture away from your baby's skin. My babies skin is always soft and dry in the morning, not clammy at all.

Using a Prefold diaper will not usually be enough to last an entire night if your baby is a heavy wetter or frequently nurses through the night. However, if you layer in a micro insert and a fleece liner or two this will add absorbency. For a fitted adding an additional micro liner or a fleece doubler will do the trick as well! The fleece-topped doubler wicks moisture away from my babies skin and leaves them feeling more dry.

Double diapering? Well it is what it sounds like:) You simply place one prefold diaper inside another to help absorb moisture..I've got some funny looks when I have talked about using two prefolds with a snappi and a cover. It might be a little bulky but it has worked great for 3 years and 3 children.

If you want to stick to Prefolds or Fitteds at night, then the next step would be the cover. The most popular covers in our house are wool soakers. When it is cold weather I tend to stick with my Knit Wool longies. Regardless of the cloth diaper style you selected, consider fleece or wool when picking a diaper cover. A wool soaker can absorb more than one third of their weight in moisture and are water resistant while remaining breathable. They fit fantastic over most cloth diapers, helping keep baby dry in whatever cloth diapering system you choose. Fleece is really great as well, however you may find a wool soaker is better for your baby, with its natural wetness protection. Plus you can get a scented wool wash and/or lanolin, so when the wool gets wet, my twins smell like Cotton candy! Other than wool, I have found that Bummis Super Brite Covers, and Flip Covers work fantastic! However, when I use a Bummis or a Flip I always double the prefolds or add an extra liner in a fitted diaper.

I would like to add that not every system will work for every baby. It can depend on how heavy your baby wets through the night, and if you want to change them during the night.

As your baby gets older, your night time diapering routine might end up changing. Night time diapering is an ongoing process, but with a clear understanding of your options, there is no need to be afraid!

Cheers to dry nights!

Flip Diaper Review

I've tried a lot of different diapers over the past few years, and one that remains in my rotation (although I only have one) is the Flip diaper system by bumGenius.

It consists of a cover plus insert, making it an AI2/hybrid diaper.  The covers are one-size, making it economical.  You simply place soiled inserts into the pail and place a clean insert in the cover.  Easy.  I find the fit excellent on my boys -- the stretch is very forgiving and generous in the upper weight range, and the cover fits both my 22lb boy and my 35lb boy well (with room to grow!)

The cloth insert choices are Stay-Dry or Organic Cotton, and are both one-size -- you fold them to create the correct length (small, medium, or large).  There are ALSO disposable inserts, in packs of 18, which make traveling or caregiver situations even easier!

Overall, I really like the Flip system and would suggest it to those looking for a multitude of options.  Have you tried the Flip diapers?

Our Cloth Diaper Journey

When I was pregnant, I started looking in to cloth diapers.  I was amazed at how cool (and cute) they were.  I started thinking of all the money we could save by using cloth.  I thought about how my baby would never have to wear a plasticy, papery disposable diaper.  Then I thought about how to convince my husband that we needed to do this.

After the talk about money savings, better for baby, better for the environment, he couldn’t get past the ick factor.  He was afraid that our washing machine was going to become a poopy mess.  I explained how breast fed baby poop is water soluble, and that you just swish or spray off other poops.  I did everything I could to assure him that our washing machine would do just fine.  After all of that, I still couldn’t get him on board.

Fast forward to August 2010.
Our adorable little boy is 3 months old.  We’ve been using sposies since the day he was born, and every poop equals a change of clothes.  No matter what brand we tried, he leaked out of all of them.

Then, one day, while buying a $40 box of diapers, I made a decision.  We were going to try cloth, and I was going to convince my husband that this was the way to go.  I was tired of ruined clothes, and money down the drain.  Amazingly, my husband agreed!

Two weeks later, I bought my first cloth diapers!  I bought 5 bumGenius 3.0’s.  It was enough to get us cloth diapering at least half the day, and I was washing every night.  After about a week, we knew that we didn’t like the pocket diapers.  They didn’t fit him well, and we were having leaking issues.

We were going to buy Flip diapers, because we could get them locally, but we had a few concerns about them.  We didn’t like the one-size insert, or the fact that there is nothing to hold them in place.  We talked about buying Flips and making our own sized inserts, and possibly adding something to hold them in place.  Then I did a Google search.

“Diapers like Flips”
And I discovered Best Bottom diapers.  They had sized inserts, snaps to hold the inserts in, and they had double leg gussets to help hold in the poo.  Yes please!  They addressed all the concerns we had with the Flips, plus some.  So, I sold my bG’s and ordered some Best Bottom’s.

We immediately loved them.  The materials are so nice (nicer than the bG’s I think), they are super trim, and they don’t leak!  Better still, my husband loves them!

We are now a full time Best Bottom family.  I’ve even branched out and purchased some Imagine prefolds and Kissaluv’s contours.  All from Nicki’s!  As for my husband, he is officially a cloth diaper lover!  He even offered to install a diaper sprayer for me, and I didn’t even have to ask!
